Homicide suspect arrested after shootout with police in Nogales

TUCSON (KVOA) - A shootout between police and a homicide suspect in Nogales ended in an arrest, according to a release shared by Nogales Police Department Thursday.

On Tuesday, Nogales Police Department were dispatched to a local motel in reference to a homicide. After further investigation, NPD named 42-year-old Gustavo Aguilar Chavez as a suspect in the case.

According to NPD, police began surveilling Chavez after the officers pinpointed his whereabouts on Tuesday.

When the 42-year-old discovered he was being followed while driving a vehicle in Nogales, NPD said he reportedly led the officers on high-speed chase.

Department officials said Chavez abandoned his vehicle at Dumbauld Street and exchanged gunfire with the officers and proceeded to flee on foot.

He was arrested shortly after behind a residence on East Court Street with non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured in connection to the shooting.

An administrative review will be held in connection to the case per NPD policy.
