TUCSON (KVOA) - Southern Arizona is seeing an emergency shortage of convalescent plasma amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The plasma is collected from people who have since recovered from the virus. The plasma contains antibodies that could help people who are actively fighting the virus.

Courtney Slanaker, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross, said this type of plasma is in high demand.

"There has been more COVID-19 cases in Arizona," Slanaker said. "We are using more of the plasma then what we are recieving."

Jane Locke was sick from the visu for almost one month. Monday July 27, 2020, Locke chose to donate her plasma.

"This is something we all need to do," Locke said. "It's in out human nature."
