Posted 8:44 PM 5/9/2012 : Wild weather tricks tourists in Arizona
TUCSON - Wind breakers and ball caps were in high demand Wednesday afternoon.
Many were caught off guard, including Arizona tourists. Especially a pair from Denver who booked their vacation planning for sunshine and pool weather.
Hold on to your hats. News 4 cameras caught two who were caught in the thick of it.
"This is unbelievable. I'm visiting here and I've never been in anything like this. So this is amazing," said Mary Ann Stypa visiting from Colorado.
News 4's Rebecca Taylor asks her friend, "Were you prepared for this?"
"No not at all, in fact I was sitting in the car and I said wow it's really hazy over there, wonder what's going on? And two seconds later, this," describes Karen Garcia.
She's right, in a flash sand dirt and debris blanketed areas of Tucson.
By the San Xavier Mission on the southwest side, open fields fulled the storm's power.
"What does it feel like on your skin," asks Rebecca.
"Well the sand hits it and it's rough and it stings a little bit," says Stypa.
Garcia says, "Right now it's okay, but before it was very stingy, you know I tasted salt on my lips."
The calm after the storm, finally brought the sun out, but temperatures remained chilly. Wild weather for these tourists.
"Yes I'm originally from New York, so I'm really not used to this," Garcia says laughing.
Stypa and Garcia are staying for another couple days, so they'll leave with a real taste of what Tucson's weather has to offer.
