Posted 2:51 PM 11/9/2012 : Victim of home invasion speaks out
TUCSON - Anthony Giroux thought he was doing a good thing when three men asked him for water on a warm afternoon.
Giroux said he was at his northwest side home when three men came up to his porch and asked if they could clean his yard. Giroux told them no and that's when one of them asked for water. Giroux went to get some and when he returned he was attacked. "I looked up and he's coming through the gate with a gun. I was caught off guard," he said. "He sweep me up and had me in the choke hold and was just telling me to be quiet or 'I'm going to shoot you.'"
The men demanded wallets, jewelry and cash from Giroux and his two friends. They gave the men what they had and that's when the suspects saw themselves on Giroux's television screen. Giroux had installed a home surveillance system two weeks before the attack. He bought it at a yard sale. "It's good to have a surveillance system, cameras obviously helped and we can keep these guys off the street because it's just not right," he said.
Deputy Tom Peine from the Pima County Sheriff's department said the video is what helped nab two of the suspects. He also said home surveillance cameras are affordable and becoming more common. "If you take that risk to invade somebody's home then you may be caught on these camera and we'll put it out there and we'll ask the public for help," Deputy Peine said.
As for Giroux, he's just glad he and his friends are alive. "First thing that went through my mind was: I really didn't want my head blown out here on the sidewalk," he said. "I didn't want to die that way."
On Friday, deputies returned Giroux's wallet to him, however, one suspect remains outstanding. If you have any information, PCSD officials ask you to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
