Posted 4:42 PM 9/3/2012 : Tucsonans celebrate Labor Day, support unions
TUCSON - Tucsonans gathered at Reid Park to celebrate Labor Day but to also support work unions.
Residents took advantage of the free Labor Day picnic, enjoying hot dogs, watermelon and a cool beverage. However, they also gathered to show their support for work unions.
"Unions are important for us, especially for tradesman," said Lupe Romero, who's boyfriend is a member of a union. "It's just important to be part of it and join them whenever they have social functions like this."
Tucsonans spread the word while enjoying activities for the entire family, from face painting for the kids and a hot dog eating contest, to volleyball for union members as well as an appearance by the Tucson High Mariachi Band.
However, the theme of the event circled back to backing unions.
"Being that my father was part of a union, I think it's important that they support them because they support some of their benefits," said Angelina Garcia, who attended the picnic.
Booths lined the area in the hopes of sending their labor day message to the rest of the public.
"We focus on worker's rights and it's important to have representation in the workplace," Laura Horton-Charles, who ran a booth for Local 99. "Collective bargaining has slipped away and it's got to come back now."
