Posted 8:36 PM 4/18/2012 : UA Softball smacks seven homers in doubleheader sweep

TUCSON - No. 13 Arizona Softball (31-12, 8-7 Pac-12) hit as many home runs (seven) as New Mexico (24-11, 0-0 Mountain West) had hits in its doubleheader sweep of the Lobos. Arizona downed New Mexico 8-1 in game one and 5-0 in game two.

Shelby Pendley hit three home runs on the day, numbers 15, 16 and 17 of the season, inching her closer to the Wildcat freshman record of 21 homers in a season, set by Brigette Del Ponte in 2010.

Lini Koria added two homers of her own, both in game one, and drove home three runs in the contest.
Arizona pitchers Shelby Babcock and Kenzie Fowler allowed a combined one run on seven hits in 14 innings pitched.
UA put runners in scoring position in all 12 offensive innings.

The Cats get a weekend off before hosting Oregon, April 27-29 at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Game 1: Arizona 8, New Mexico 1

The Wildcats recorded a season-high five home runs to beat New Mexico 8-1 in game one.

Two Cats, Pendley and Koria had two blasts apiece, while Chelsea Goodacre added a home run of her own.

The first pitch of the day was ripped over the centerfield fence by Stefanie Carramusa, but Babcock would go on to allow just three hits the rest of the way. Babcock (16-7) allowed the one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

In addition to Pendley and Koria's multi-hit games, Hallie Wilson and Chelsea Suitos had two apiece. Wilson went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Arizona responded to Carramusa's leadoff home run with a run of its own in the bottom of the first. Two singles and a New Mexico error loaded the bases with one out for UA. Koria would drive home a run with a hit-by-pitch to tie the game at one run each.

The Cats took the lead in the second when Pendley led off the inning with a home run. Jessica Spigner would reach on an error and be driven home by Goodacre's fifth home run of the season. A Kristen Arriola walk and a Karissa Buchanan single put two on for Wilson who singled in a run to give Arizona a 5-1 lead after three.

Pendley and Koria began the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs to move the score to 7-1 in favor of Arizona.

In the sixth, Lini Koria belted her 11th home run of the season to give Arizona a 8-1 lead.

Following the home run, Babcock allowed a runner to reach scoring position just twice, in the second and seventh innings.

Game 2: Arizona 5, New Mexico 0

Kenzie Fowler struck out 11 in her complete-game, three-hit shutout and Arizona downed New Mexico 5-0 in game two to sweep the Lobos.

Pendley homered again and Kristen Arriola had a bomb of her own in the Cats' victory. Arriola went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the contest.

Fowler (13-5) allowed only four base-runners in the game and allowed Lobos to get in scoring position just twice in the game. The junior struck out 11 batters, her most since fanning 12 against College of Charleston on March 2. Her one walk was a season-best for a seven-inning effort.

Arizona had two runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, including loading the bases in the second third and fourth innings, and scored just two runs in the process.

In the second inning, Arizona took advantage of two Jordyn Bledsoe errors to plate two unearned runs in the frame. Alex Lavine notched the game's first RBI when she reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to score Spigner from third. A second Bledsoe error off the bat of Wilson scored Goodacre from third to give Arizona a 2-0 lead after two.

The score would stand until the fifth when Arriola knocked a ball over the left-centerfield wall to give the Cats a 3-0 lead.

Pendley led off the sixth inning with her third home run of the game. The homer extended her team-lead in home runs (17) and RBI (45). Later in the frame, Spigner would plate a run with a sac-fly to centerfield
