TUCSON - It's official: the University of Arizona has a new president.
Dr. Ann Weaver Hart is now officially the university's 21st president.
Surprisingly, Dr. Hart chose to be welcomed into the university outside, instead of in - she said it had more of a "UA" feel. Despite the high July temps, there was still a lot of excitement in the air.
Dr. Hart was greeted by the UA band and hundreds of others dressed in red and blue. Many believe she is the perfect fit because of her experience at multiple other universities.
Some supporters say they like the fact that she has a background in arts, others like that she's a woman. Either way, she will face some serious challenges and she says she's ready.
She says that she recognizes that the UA is "a $2-plus-billion business in some ways. We might be not for-profit, but nevertheless, we must constantly work to be better at the business of what we do by reducing cost of doing business or the overhead."
"When you look at her resume, she has led two other universities," says Melinda Burke with the UA Alumni Association. "President of Northwest and President of Temple - she has run a medical complex, she is familiar with land grant mission. I can't think of a leader that is more perfectly suited to lead this university."
Dr Hart will take a few days to get settled in and get to know her surroundings, but when asked when she will get down to business, she said "three months ago."
