TUCSON - Tucson Unified School District released their options for school consolidation and closures, which is on the agenda for the board's meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening.

With a projected $17 million shortfall, TUSD is facing tough financial issues and hopes closing some schools will make a dent in the defecit.

Fifteen schools are on the chopping block, according to the consolidation options posted on TUSD's website. Ten are the proposed closures with five alternative options for TUSD to decide on.

The schools targeted include: Hohokam, Carson, Pueblo Gardens, Hollinger, Chumaker, Cragin, Fort Lowell-Townsend, Corbet, Brichta and Menlo Park.

The alternative options include: Lyons, Warren, Manzo, Sewell and Howenstine.

TUSD Board Member Mark Stegeman said there is reason to be found within the proposed closures.

"I personally think there are probably five to ten closures that make sense and present more benefits than costs but I don't know how the rest of the board feels," Stegeman told News 4 Tucson.

According to the released plan, students from those schools they decide to close will be consolidated into several other schools within the distrcit.

While the closure of several schools will be cost-saving, some are less optimistic about how much will be saved.

"The idea that you could raise that kind of money by closing schools was always an illusion that people thought that, but you can raise some money and we will save some money with some closures," Stegeman said.

The board is set to discuss the options at tomorrow's meeting at Catalina High School.
