Posted 5:20 PM 8/24/2012 : TUSD proposes changes to school calendar
TUCSON- TUSD board member Mark Stegeman is calling for public input on the proposed changes to its calendar for the 2013-2014 school year.
Board member Mark Stegeman said the proposed calendar changes could help both student achievement and the budget shortfall.
The changes include pushing school's start date to August 5, reducing fall break from five days to two, eliminating early release on Wednesdays and extending the Thanksgiving holiday to include the Wednesday before.
Some parents had concerns about extending the Thanksgiving holiday.
"I'm concerned that the Wednesday before thanksgiving would create another situation with parents needing places to have their children for that day," said father Ricardo Gomez.
Stegeman said he understands the concern.
"But I think we would have activities and have something set up, like this year, we introduced this long fall break, but many parents were still working, so we set up alternative things for students to do," he said. "And I think we want to do the same thing for the day before Thanksgiving."
The district is asking for your opinion.
You can email, mail, or even attend one of the board meetings to express your concerns.
The district plans to vote on the proposed calendar September 11.
