Posted 6:23 PM 3/12/2013 : TUSD clerk fired, arrested for sexual conduct with 15-year-old boy
TUCSON - A temporary employee of the Tucson Unified School District is facing criminal charges for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy.
Juan Esquivias, 21, was an attendance clerk at Lawrence Intermediate School. He was arrested on March 4 after an investigation led law enforcement to charge him of sexual conduct with a minor and aggravated luring.
Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Peine said the 15-year-old boy was not a student at the school and that the investigation began in February.
Investigators said the two had a sexual relationship that had been going on for a while, tracing back to May 2012.
"The challenge in pursuing predators like these that prey on young people on and on children is that they are extremely deceitful and that unfortunately many of them are very good at what they do," Peine said.
When TUSD officials were notified of the investigation, they took immediate action and assigned Esquivias to have no further interaction with students, while they launched their own safety investigation. TUSD found Esquivias' actions inappropriate and fired him.
"TUSD takes concerns about staff conduct very seriously and works to ensure our students and staff are in a safe and nuturing environment," said Cara Rene, a spokeswoman for TUSD.
