Posted 11:04 AM 7/3/2012 : TUSD Board prep for budget battle
TUCSON - The TUSD Governing Board is facing some difficult decisions regarding the upcoming 2013-2014 Budget. Nothing has been decided yet, but it is very clear the cuts are coming, and they will be severe.
The board held a public meeting last night to discuss options to looming budget cuts.
As the numbers were presented there was a recurring theme. Through continued loss of students city-wide, the district has lost millions of dollars in government funding. They are now anticipating a $17 million shortfall in the next budget. According to TUSD Chief Financial officer, Yosef Awwad, the only answer is a drastic reduction in spending/. "It is going to be significant no matter what we do", he said. "It is not something we really want to do but, it is the reality we have to deal with."
The cuts may come in the form of salary cuts, elimination of jobs and loss of programs. One option includes closing schools and building high enrollment or super schools, with some schools possibly having as many as 3,000 students.
The reason is dramatic savings in operating costs and a healthier bottom line.
No decisions were made at the meeting last night. The board will meet again on July 10 to vote on the 2013 - 2014 budget.
