Tucson - The Tucson Unified School District continues to whittle away at the $17 million deficit from the 2013-2014budget.

On Tuesday night the governing board met in special session to discuss options.

Last month the board approved the closures of 11 campuses but that will only account for $4.2 million of the deficit. The board must now find a way to cut $12.8 million more.

According to TUSD Governing Board President, Adelita Grijalva, most cuts will come from district employees, "Over 90% of our budget is staffing so the impact will be a reduction in staffing for teachers, a reduction in administrators, a reduction in counselors and librarians".

With fewer staff members school programs will also be hit. Having teachers also in the line of fire has Howenstine High Magnet School Principal, Maritza Numnez, very concerned about displaced staff, "There is a fear of increased class size which would mean less teachers, so how are they going to decide which teachers are placed and which ones are not."

Regardless where the cuts are made Adelita Grijalva admits it is going to hurt students, "We are going to do as much as we can to avoid the impact on the child, but there will be impacts".
