TUCSON - Digital cameras are on the verge of becoming an endangered species thanks in part to the camera phones. Our tech contributor Quincey Hobbs is here to explain why you may want to ditch your digital camera.

Quincey, what about camera phones are making digital cameras a less appealing purchase?

Just to be clear, the digital cameras that I am referring to are not the DLR professional or serious hobbyist camera, but instead the point and click consumer cameras like the cyber shots and those of that ilk. There are several factors that make camera phones preferable. You only have one device to carry that has multiple functions and it is generally always handy. You have the advantage of easily switching between camera and video modes, and you also have the benefit of being able to share your photos faster and easier. Finally, the accessory market for camera phones enhances their use for owners.

What are some of the enhancements that camera phone accessories provide?

Autostitch and 360 Panorama both offer apps for your phone that easily allow you create a panorama with a few clicks of your camera. Kogeto Dot is a device that you attach to your phones camera lens and with one click take a 360 degree camera shot.

Quincey, what are Instagram and Touch Retouch?

Both Instagram and Touch Retouch are to camera phones what Photoshop has been to photos. They both allow you to edit or filter pictures in a few steps and all from your phone. Touch Retouch even allows you to remove people from the background or place things in the background.

What are the costs for these goodies for your camera phone?

The price for the apps max out at about $2 and the Kogeto Dot sells for about $80.
