Posted 4:08 PM 1/19/2013 : Tucsonans take part in National Day of Service
TUCSON-Americans are taking their time out this weekend to volunteer for community service projects.
It's part of the National Day of Service.
Volunteers are giving back to others to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Over 20 people showed up just to one community service project.
As they snipped, raked and hauled overgrown weeds, trees even cactus, volunteers took in the meaning of the day.
"He did so much, and to give back on his weekend is a treat," said Amber Hall, a volunteer.
Hall made National Day of Service, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., a family event.
They're cleaning up landscape at Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse.
"They're out doing things for other people, so we might as well come and help them," said Hall.
U of A student Kaitlyn Williams took a break from school to lend a helping hand.
"Other people need more than you do," said Williams.
In appreciation, the children from the center gave the volunteers a painting.
At Joan Ducker's home, the Junior League of Tucson kept busy making sure Ducker's home is accessible and safe.
"Helping independent seniors stay in their home," said a Shirley, a volunteer with the Junior League of Tucson.
The league spends their weekend on a different senior citizen's home each month.
"It's wonderful that they come over and help us old folks out," said Ducker.
There are events scheduled throughout the weekend. If you'd like to volunteer, click here for more information.
