TUCSON - The Memorial Day festivities kicked off early Monday morning with the annual Tucson Estates Parade. It is a tradition meant to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country, and to honor all the men and women of the U.S. Military.
They packed the sidewalks of the Tucson Estates, waving flags and giving thanks for those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.
"It's something we can't take for granted," said Bill Graves, who served in the Air Force.
"I am a combat veteran so I know what that loss means," said Bill Austen, who served in Vietnam with the Marine Corps.
For Virginia Piotrowski, that loss hits close to home.
"My grandfather served in WWII and was killed during that time," she said. "Just so that we remember what they went through, and they went through a lot for us."
The parade is also about fun and bringing Tusconans together, something it's been doing for more than 40 years now.
"We try to make it every year to support the community and get out and enjoy Memorial Day," said Holly Mundell, who lives in Tucson.
A day of reflection and remembrance.
"We have to remember from year to year how all our fallen heroes have kept us safe," said Graves.
A chance to give back for those who have already given so much.
"Even though our economy, we're struggling, it's still America," said Tucson Resident Rubye Myers. "We still have choices to make and we're free to make them so I think it's important to remember those things."
