TUCSON - Local Catholics are glad to see there is a new Pope.
Beverly Mahl attended a service at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church Wednesday evening.
"It's just like any leader," she said. "We're happy to have a president, and as a Catholic, we're happy to have a Pope."
The Tucson Diocese Bishop, Most Rev. Gerald Kicanas, said he is glad to see a Pope from South America.
"He knows the importance of the Latino community in the life of the church," Kicanas said. "I think we should feel proud about that, being a place where there are strong Hispanic communities."
Monsignor Tom Cahalane at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church wanted to see a non-European Pope, but he said the Papacy is not about geography or politics.
"I think a big challenge is how we are portraying the gospel," Cahalane said, "and how the gospel must be our first priority."
