TUCSON - Tucsonans braved the chilly temperatures Tuesday after Tucson recorded a new low of 17 degrees, the first time in 39 years.

JoAnne Thompson was walking downtown Tuesday morning, "I've been here about 30 years and I've never felt it this cold. I'm freezing." Students at the UA weren't prepared for the frigid weather, "I don't think most of the buildings on the UA campus are designed for it to be this cold," said Adam Kratz.

Meanwhile, The Salvation Army is in need of donations as temperatures dipped to a new low in Tucson this week.

Ashley Lueders, a spokeswoman for the organization said last year on January 15 the Salvation Army helped 88 people, but this week on January 15th they helped 177.

Leuders said they need everything from money to socks even laundry detergent, "towels, blankets, bed and they have to be washed every day. I mean they're doing laundry from sun up to sundown." She said the organization brought in extra cots to accommodate the need. "We won't turn anyone away," she said.

The Salvation Army has hired 11 seasonal employees to meet the demand.

Anyone wanting to make donations can drop items off at the Salvation Army Hospitality House, more information can be found at their website, www.salvationarmytucson.org.

Also, donations can be dropped off at any Naughton's Plumbing location in Tucson.
