TUCSON - With monsoon knocking on the front door Tucsonans can expect quite a bit of rain.

Water is a precious resource the desert desperately needs but with such a dry climate it can be difficult to hang on to all that water.

A method used since the beggining of agriculture may be resurfacing. The Tohono O'odham and Hopi tribes still use water harvesting to this day. This summer some youth volunteers are making a point to learn it as well.

"In the desert, it's pretty dry out here. We are trying to get youth to start when they are young and realize how important it is to conserve water," said Erin Kowalsky with Volunteer Southern Arizona.

The water hits the roof and is emptied into a drain, then moves into a large storage container for watering your yard or garden. This helps those with water harvesting systems to save money on their monthly water bill.
