TUCSON - The City Council unanimously voted to allow Vail to create its own town.

It was necessary because the proposed Vail boundaries are so close to Tucson. The City could over-rule any attempt for Vail to incorporate its own town.

Incorporated cities and towns receive more money from the State of Arizona than unincorporated areas of counties.

Tucson City Councilman Paul Cunningham says Tucson would not receive any money, but the region would.

"Of course we're on board with it," Cunningham said. "The competition is us and Maricopa County. The competition isn't between the communities of Tucson. By not having incorporated areas, or having a lack of incorporated areas in Pima County, we miss out."

A group called Citizens for Vail is organizing the effort. George Mower is one of about a dozen Vail residents working on the committee.

They need 10% of registered voters in the proposed incorporation to sign a petition. Mower estimates that is about 300-500 people.

Then there would be a special election. Mower hopes that will be in August.
