TUCSON - The Tucson Visitor's Bureau has launched a new television show in Mexico, hoping to attract tourists from south of the border.
The half hour infomercial called "Vamos A Tucson" airs weekly and reaches more than 200,000 households in Mexico, according to the Tucson Visitor's Bureau.
"What we're looking to promote is our hotels and properties here...restaurants. We found out that every time we have a food item, it's very popular," said Felipe Garcia, the Vice President for the Tucson Visitor's Bureau.
The video regularly highlights the best features of Tucson, including Jonathan Landeens' restaurant in east Tucson, "Jonathan's Cork." Landeen says the video could help the local economy continue to attract tourists who spend money in the area.
"As they encourage us to go to Rocky Point and San Carlos and all those places that are destinations, I think they have to remember that we're also a destination for dining and shopping in Southern Arizona," Landeen told News 4 Tucson.
The television show is funded by the Tucson bed tax collected in hotels. Although Tucson already enjoys a steady stream of tourists from Mexico, the hope for this video is to further increase that economic impact.
"Our goal of course is how we bring that Mexican visitor to come more frequently and stay longer," Garcia said, adding later: "That will mean a stronger economic impact in our community."
