TUCSON - It was already planned, but couldn't have come at a better time.

Tucson Police trained Monday for an "Active Shooter" scenario. This exercise was scheduled before the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Tucson Police cadets who graduated last month spent the morning in the classroom learning about the exercise and then spent the afternoon putting to use what they learned. The National Guard also took part.

Everyone suited up and went through active shooter training. The scenario was police being called to an elementary school where shots have been fired, and there's been an explosion. Captain David Azuelo explains this training gives officers a sense of what to expect during a real life situation.

Every Tucson Police officer must go through this training.

It's a high stress scenario where officers are getting pulled by people who are at the school as they make their way to where the shooter is located. The target is the shooter.

Captain Azuelo says the officers have to find him or her, and stop them.

This type of training has been going on since the Columbine shooting in 1999 and is updated every year.

Police also used a Mass Casualty Incident medical kit. It's the first of its kind and is designed to help officers help victims before paramedics arrive. This allows Tucson Police and Tucson Fire to work together to save lives.

Training has already paid off, as police used it in 2002 during the College of Nursing shooting at the University of Arizona. Three professors were shot and killed by a student who was upset because he was failing. Captain Azuelo and his team were the first to go in, and found one of the professors shot and killed in her office. So now he and others are using their experience to train the cadets, so they can save lives, and keep the public safe.
