Posted 4:00 PM 6/21/2012 : Tucson dog vying for title of World's Ugliest Dog
She may have a face only a mother could love, but that is good news for one Tucson dog and her family. Josie is a Chinese Crested, rescued from a puppy mill. On Friday night she will be one of a select few to strut her stuff in the World's Ugliest Competition.
The annual contest takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, CA. It attracts a huge crowd both in person and on television. However, Josie's owner says they are not competing to win but rather to raise awareness.
Josie may not be the best looking pooch on the block but her owner, Linda Elmquist, would not have it any other way. Elmquist fostered Josie through S.A.F.E., or Save Animals From Euthanasia. It's a non-profit dedicated to finding homes for animals about to be put down. After four months and no takers, Elmquist adopted Josie herself.
"People don't care for ugly dogs you know," Elmquist said. "I think she's beautiful."
That unique beauty will launch Josie into the national spotlight Friday, but she will face some tough competition from dogs like Harley, Isaboo and Creature, the early favorite from Utah. Still, Elmquist says the trip is more about sharing Josie's story than showing off her looks.
"There's a lot of rescue dogs out there available for adoption," she said. "People get to see these dogs on TV and realize how much personality they have, and hopefully people will consider buying a dog that is less than perfect."
The competition is Friday at 6p.m. and the winner gets $1,000.
