TUCSON - The city council is working to increase fines for loud parties.

Tucson city ordinance allows police to "red-tag" houses if the residents are bothering their neighbors.

The fines start at $100. The modification would make a first offense $500.

"The residents in the area, pretty much around campus, are tired of seeing their neighborhoods get trashed," Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik said, "and the landlords are tired of seeing their rental units get trashed."

A second offense would cost $750.

Some students think the current penalties are steep enough.

"500 bucks is a lot for college kids," student Eric Asturias said, "and I think it's unnecessary."

Alex Zee's house was "red-tagged" a few months ago.

"It's deterred us from having any parties like that ever since then," Zee said, "I don't think it's out of control."

Homeowners in the area say it is more than just a college neighborhood.

"There's all kinds of people. There's students, families, there's old people," Chuck See said, "there are a lot of people that really appreciate having a little peace and quiet, especially at 2 and 3 in the morning."

The new ordinance would also make a person a repeat offender even if they are responsible for an unruly gathering at another location.
