TOMBSTONE, Ariz. -Hundreds of people honored Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever this weekend.
Dever died Tuesday in a roll-over crash in Northern Arizona.
They walked down Allen street in Tombstone Sunday.
Dever's family attended the ceremony and walked in front of the procession.
They wore t-shirts in memory of Dever that read: Sheriff Larry Dever: Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Papa, Sheriff and Friend.
Dever's horse was supposed to lead the processional.
"He's got a big white horse," said his good friend George Wright.
Wright tells News 4 Tucson, even the horse is feeling the loss.
"He wasn't doing so well, so they offered not to, so I brought mine," said Wright. "It's the least I could do."
Starting from Allen and 6th street, loved ones and supporters gathered to pay their respects to the sheriff with a traditional "walk down."
"We're all in a haze," said State Representative David Gowan.
It's an old west tradition to walk down the street in honor of those who have passed away.
The horse leading the processional symbolizes the fallen rider.
"Usually in battle, and in this case he did fall in battle because he was still in active duty as the sheriff," said Tombstone Marshal Billy Cloud.
There were people of all ages and eras proudly displaying t-shirts or stickers with Sheriff Denver's name.
"He was honorable. He had integrity. He had justice and he was otherwise just a fantastic person," said friend Enid Reinhart.
Some friends and family tell News 4 Tucson they still can't believe this beloved figure is gone.
"Many people were just stunned that Dever is gone. I actually had to go to the news and search and search just to make sure," said Representative Gowan.
They hope this honor would have made Sheriff Dever proud since he was what they called a true western.
"He was about as honest and true a man from day one and he was a cowboy," said Wright.
Dever's memorial will be Wednesday at 5:30 at Buena High School.
