TUCSON - A Tucson Police officer is under investigation after hitting and killing a man who was crossing the street at Rosemont and Speedway early Monday morning.
Police say 13-year TPD veteran and K-9 officer Chris Fenoglio was responding to a call at about 2 a.m., lights and sirens activated, when he slammed into a man crossing the street. The man was not in a crosswalk, TPD officials confirm.
A woman who was driving behind the officer told News 4 Tucson what she saw:
"I could see him clearly as he [Officer Fenoglio] was driving down Speedway," said Kelsey Guerrero. "He stopped pretty suddenly, and I noticed right before he had stopped that there was someone, some sort of figure that darted across the road, from right to left."
In addition to a criminal investigation, TPD's Board of Inquiry has launched an internal investigation to determine if the officer "followed all rules and procedures while en route to this call," TPD spokesperson Chris Widmer said.
The victim's identity has not been released yet, pending notification of the next of kin.
