Posted 6:00 PM 6/7/2012 : Swim lessons essential lifesaving skill

TUCSON -- A little boy lost his life this week in Pinal County drowning in a swimming pool. This year in Pima County we've had four near drownings.

Our News4 Tucson Lifesaver program is place to help prevent these accidents from occurring.

The fatality in Pinal County reminds us of the A.B.C.'s of swim safety.
A= Adult supervision. B=Barriers. C=Classes which means swim lessons in case your little swimmer gets past the first two defenses.

At Sunshine Swim School the idea is to start early. Infants as young as six months are in the Platypus class. Every summer little swimmers return... advancing to the next level.

Emily Schlater is five. She's in the Goldfish class.

"We have a pool in our backyard and I need her to know water safety," says Emily's mom.

Evita Marye also had a five year-old in lessons the day Kristi's Kids was there. Evita knows swim safety is critical for her daughter.

"I don't want it to build a false sense of confidence, that's not what we're doing. I'm not substituting that for adult supervision."

Anne Welsh is teaching the goldfish class

"It's the first time they're kinda learning big arms. So swimming across the pool by themselves and coming back. Working on breathing on their own."

Anne says it's rewarding to seeing the kids improve. Each session is 25 minutes which is well worth the investment and time.

"There are so many in Tucson and in Arizona in general and around, that it's really important for the kids to learn how to be able to jump from the wall and get back to the set by themselves," says Welsh
