Posted 3:31 PM 5/24/2012 : Texas state fair offering a new variety of deep-fried decadence
(NBC) - A Texas family is putting a new spin on a Girl Scout favorite.
They're deep frying the Samoa cookie for the state fair.
Christi Erpillo and her sister Joanne know they're doing more than growing the family business, they're furthering what you could call a "frynasty".
"Mother was the first to bring funnel cakes to the state fair back in the 80s. Wanda Winters, she's the funnel cake queen," Erpillo explains.
All three were Girl Scouts.
"We think they contributed to all of our successes later on in life so we can give back to them for a change," Erpillo says.
This year happens to be the organization's 100th anniversary, and it asked the family to fry Samoas.
After experimenting with several recipes they settled on wonton-wrapped cookies topped with more coconut, chocolate and caramel.
The family expects to fry 100,000 Samoas during this year's state fair.
It's an order so big the cookies have to be shipped directly from one of two Girl Scout cookie bakeries.
