Posted 5:32 PM 12/23/2012 : SWAT outside home for nine hours
TUCSON-It started out as a welfare check but grew into a SWAT standoff that shut down Golf Links Rd. between Wilmont and Kolb.
Police were stationed there for nine hours trying to talk to the man they believed was inside his home and a threat to himself.
The commotion woke neighbors around 1 a.m.
"'It's the Tucson police department. We know you're in there. Please come out. We're not going,'" said Neighbor Jason Granillo.
Granillo said that's what he heard coming from police speakers.
"'Please come to the door please come outside and talk to us. We don't want to hurt you. We just want to make sure you're okay.' Things that would soothe you that would make you want to come out of the house," said Granillo.
And later: "People were in my backyard...people by the gate. All the cops running around the windows," said Granillo.
The SWAT team even got on Granillo's roof.
"There's the guys that were in our backyard right there. I guess they're off the roof now," said Granillo.
Tucson police said family told them the man was a threat to himself and there were weapons in his home.
"It was pretty intense pretty insane," said Neighbor James Armstrong.
Neighbors said they were given the option to evacuate or lock up.
"It's a little scary when they're telling you to get back in your house and stay away from windows," said Armstrong.
In the end police said the family's inconsistent statements and no sign of the man caused the police to pack up and leave.
