TUCSON- In about a month students and parents at one Flowing Wells elementary school will notice some big changes in their walk to and from school.

It's all part of a pedestrian enhancement project News 4 Tucson first told you about last January.  Now the project is completed. 

Laguna Elementary School on Shannon Road now has sidewalks, a dedicated bus lane and renovated crosswalks. It will make the walk to school a lot easier for America Montiel and her three children.  "It's a lot safer now," Montiel says.

Construction on the improvements began last December, when parents brought their concerns to Pima County.  "It's much easier, especially when it's raining," Montiel says.  "It would flood and there would be some water, so it's easier with the sidewalks because it's nicer to walk on."

The project cost about $1.2 million, all paid for by the Pima County Highway User Revenue Fund and Federal Transportation Enhancement Funds.

Flowing Wells Superintendent Nic Clement says the bus lane in particular will be a big help.  "

Now you have a separate lane where traffic doesn't need to stop in order for the bus to load and unload," Clement says.

The improvements bring comfort to parents like Montiel, who says she will be a lot more confident about the safety of her children when they walk to school this year.
