Posted 7:44 AM 10/16/2012 : Six-year-old Sahuarita girl makes life saving 911 call
SAHUARITA, Ariz.- Hailey Bantlin is your average six-year-old.
She likes to play video games and go fishing.
But one day last month, Hailey did something that was anything but average. "She went above and beyond that day," says Hailey's great-grandmother, Charlyn Bantlin.
Charlyn started having an asthma attack, while Hailey was playing outside. "It just came on me, I don't even know what happened," Charlyn says.
Hailey came inside and saw her great-grandmother gasping for air. As Charlyn fell to the kitchen floor, Hailey dialed 911. "That's the last thing I heard, was her saying hurry up, my mommy can't breathe," Charlyn says.
As the clock ticked away, Hailey waited with her great-grandmother until paramedics arrived. "I know it was stressful for her to see me on the floor, purple, but she did it," Charlyn says.
It didn't take long for word of Hailey's heroic act to spread. The next day her teacher gave her an award that reads "Super Student Award".
But nobody is more proud and thankful than Charlyn, who still gets emotional just talking about that day. "I would not be here if it wasn't for her," Charlyn says.
Now she hopes their story will inspire other parents to teach their children about dialing 911. "It's just important these kids know because you never know when an emergency can happen," Charlyn says.
The Green Valley Fire Department also plans to honor Hailey at a special ceremony.
