Posted 2:26 PM 5/21/2013 : Shootout revenue pays for new soccer complex in Tucson
TUCSON - Whether it's a Sunday kid's league or a big professional game at Kino Stadium, it's safe to say Tucson is a soccer town and the soccer community will be expanding with a major complex going in behind Doolen Middle School.
You can thank the Tucson Association of Realtors and Fort Lowell Soccer Club for this one. Their shootout event brings in big bucks and the money goes right back into the community.
It's not much now but once construction is finished, the dirt lot behind Doolen will be one of the nicest fields in Tucson.
"We have two full size soccer fields here. We will have a half mile paved walking path for the neighborhood," said Curt Cannon, VP of operations for Fort Lowell Soccer Club.
It's a collaborative effort. Between shootout revenue, bond money from TUSD and contributions from other community members, the soccer community in Tucson has made it a point to showcase their talent.
"Soccer is a growing sport with FC Tucson coming on now, with what they are doing, with different tournaments and clubs we have in Tucson, keeping the youth involved and giving them a place to play and hopefully sending them down the right path," said Cannon.
The field is set to open officially in 2014, just in time for the next shootout.
