TUCSON - The Jared Loughner plea deal may have brought the survivors and family members of victims of the January 8th shooting some closure. But for many the fight now goes on beyond what happened that day.

Tuesday night they came out in force to ask the Tucson City Council to help them in their quest to change the nation's gun laws.

One by one they lined up, telling members of the city council that action to control gun violence must be taken and soon. Shooting victim Pam Simon says it is time to stop stalled efforts to end the killing, "We want to start the conversation on how we can fix this epidemic that happening in our country."

They are all part of a group called Demand A Plan. It's purpose is to persuade legislators to support measures like the Fix Gun Checks Act that would require better background checks.

All six members of the Tucson City Council unanimously approved a memorial resolution that only declared support for the Fix Gun Checks Act and other measures to reduce gun violence. But council member Steve Kozachik says the council's voices will be heard, "We can certainly say as a governing body of the second biggest city in the state and as one that has experienced at tragic event", he said, "that we are linked into the whole message that we need to do better background checks."

According to Demand A Plan, every day 34 people in the U.S. are killed by guns.
