TUCSON - Police are looking for leads to catch a man who they call a serial robber.
The suspect has hit 19 different convenience stores since Jan. 23, primarily targeting cigarettes.
Police said the man just walked into the convenience stores, went behind the counter, filled a bag full of cigarettes, then left.
It's something many Tucson residents couldn't believe. Resendo Esquibel is a smoker but was still shocked. He said, "If people are hard up for cash, I would think there would be something easier to do."
Yet police said perhaps what is even more surprising is the way he carried himself while he committing the crimes, as if he was in no hurry at all.
Sgt. Maria Hawke with the Tucson Police Department said, "Because there isn't a heightened level of frenzy or activity associated with these, he's very calm, he comes in and gets his stuff, takes the items, and then leaves."
However, because he is so calm, cameras were able to get a good look at him.
Hawke said, "They're not blurred, they are very clear or as clear as we could expect from surveillance images so that does help us."
That's good, because even though he is only stealing cigarettes, police said it's still a large problem because it doesn't look like he's going to stop. Hawke said another concern is that they could escalate to violence at any time.
If you know who the suspect is you are asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME. You can remain anonymous.
