TUCSON - It's Black Friday and shoppers are out in full force hunting for all the great deals and so are thieves. Mall security officials say they are trying to get their hands on your holiday packages.
Joshua Medlin works security at Foothills Mall says, "They're out there casing certain cars see people carrying a bunch of bags. And especially if they see them go back in its an opportune time for them to go in there and break into a car and take their items."
That happened in August and the mall's surveillance cameras saw a man stealing tools from a truck. As the thief was taking the tools, security sent an officer and also called 911. The camera even zoomed in on the license plate. Security officials say by the time they showed up he was gone. The tool box was left unlocked.
Nearly a dozen surveillance cameras are watching the parking lot with security officers monitoring them from morning until midnight. If people need assistance going to their vehicle especially at night, mall security will send someone with the shopper.
Josie Akowski is not only thrilled with the shopping deals, but with the security. She also takes personal responsibility. "I try to be very careful especially with my purse I try to stand around my gifts or if I go to eat I put them under the table so it's a little harder to get at it. You just make sure, I make sure I don't have anything visible in my car."
Security officers say people need to use common sense, lock your doors, and don't leave valuables in plain sight.
