TUCSON - Pima County Search and Rescue teams will resume their search for a possible drowning victim in Rose Canyon Lake at 10 a.m. this morning.
Pima County Sheriff's Department officials say late yesterday afternoon, 19-year-old Jacob Barlow was swimming in the lake with six of his friends when he told them he was having trouble, and then went underwater.
A bystander heard his friends screaming and jumped in the water with a mask. He could not find Barlow, sheriff's officials say. The bystander left the area to get a cell signal and called 911.
Deputies responded, but by the time a search and rescue team arrived, it was too late to search underwater.
Rose Canyon Lake remains closed, and the search continues at 10 a.m. today. The Search and Rescue team is headed up now to assess the situation. There are many hazards in the lake, such as fishing lines, hooks and other debris that the team will consider before jumping right in.
Barlow was apparently swimming about 15 feet off the shore. The lake bed takes a big drop off at that distance.
Weather may also play a role in the search. If lightening hits the area they will not be going into the water to ensure their safety.
Sheriffs say that swimming is not allowed at Rose Canyon Lake.
