TUCSON - The search for a man who shot a Tucson Police officer Sunday morning continues today.

Sergeant Robert Carpenter is at University of Arizona Medical Center, in critical but stable condition following surgery for a bullet wound to the head. Police officials confirm that following the surgery, he was alert and communicating with family members.

At about 5:15 a.m. Sunday morning, Sgt. Carpenter, a 12-year veteran of TPD, was shot in the head after police responded to reports of forced entry at a midtown home, Villasenor said. His fellow officers quickly pulled him into cover, and called for an ambulance.

The shooting happened was just hours after another forced entry call from the same address on the 4000 block of East Elmwood.

Police do not know if the same suspect was involved in both forced entries or if there are others who may be connected.

News 4 Tucson caught up with Sean Davis, a homeowner in the area of the shooting - he had this to say: "All this for what? Senseless. A complete unnecessary act of shooting somebody in the head. For what? Nothing was taken, it was all recovered and someone got a bullet in the head for nothing."

Tucson Police officials say they are looking for a Hispanic man, 20 to 30 years old, about 5'08" tall and 160 pounds in weight with a shaved head. He was wearing a dark blue jersey with the number "43" in large red numbers outlined in white, and light-colored blue jeans. Police say he also may have been wearing a hat similar to the one pictured above. This is the description of the man seen fleeing from officers after the initial break-in; police consider him a person of interest in relation to the officer-involved shooting incident, according to a news release.

TPD officials say they are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual responsible - if you know anything, they urge you to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
