TUCSON - Amy Cubillas has always been an animal activist. When she learned how overpopulated the Pima County shelter is, she started her own rescue organization called the Sanctuary Project.
She's now expanding her efforts by sending local, abandoned dogs to an organization in Texas that pairs dogs with wounded veterans.
They're called K-9's For Wounded Warriors.
Casper is one of the lucky dogs who is getting ready for his journey.
"He is just a beautiful and vivacious pup. He is perfect for the program, and he was set to be put down this Monday at 7 P.M. We rescued him. He knew it. He was ready to get out of there," Cubillas said.
It's not only a good situation for dogs like Casper. The wounded warriors are grateful as well.
"There is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog for the emotional support, but if you couple that with the fact they're helping you maneuver in ways that you're not able to do anymore, We've got a pretty great thing here," she continued.
Justin Gallick from the Pima Animal Care Center, says rescue groups like the Sanctuary Project make a huge impact in the community.
"Without them, unfortunately we'd only be able to save half as many animals as we currently are," he says.
Currently, the Sanctuary Project is self funded by Cubillas. She says it costs around $250 to $350 for each animal they send to Texas.
