TUCSON - We've been warning you about it for months. Ready or not, the Grant Road Expansion Project is underway -the first step is to widen the intersection at Oracle and Grant.
It's the beginning of phase one for this years-long construction project. People who live and work in the area tell News 4 Tucson they're not looking forward to the dust, noise, and traffic the project will bring. "Why it's already enough lanes? There's no congestion here at all. I don't get it, I don't understand why," said Thomas Neal.
Neal shops at the Walgreens on the corner of Oracle and Grant. He can't understand why there's so much road construction around the city. "It's all over, all over Tucson it's ridiculous. Every road, it's like they widen every road. I don't get it I don't know why," said Neal.
The warning signs are in place, expect delays as power crews prepare to install new traffic signals.
Soon, the center median islands will be torn out. City officials say the expansion is needed because of all the traffic on Grant and Oracle.
Josh Vizko catches the busy every day at this intersection. He understands the need to expand Grant, but he's worried the construction will make matters worse before they get better.
The worst part of navigating Grant Road is "mainly crossing these busy streets, people really don't know how to drive around here," Vizko said. But Vizko and the rest of us will just have to grin and bear it for the next year. Th e first phase of this project isn't expected to be completed until next July.
