TUCSON - The Arizona child welfare system remains strained by an overwhelming surge of juvenile court cases.

There has been an unprecedented increase in child abuse and neglect cases this year: 50 percent more than last, according to a report from the Pima County Juvenile Court system.

This means each case is getting less time in court, and the attorneys are dealing with much bigger caseloads; similar to what we're seeing with the higher caseloads in Child Protective Services.

That has lead to a massive domino effect affecting other child welfare agencies statewide, officials state.

The governor's new child abuse and neglect initiative has helped raise public awareness, and more cases are being reported.
