Posted 4:54 PM 2/7/2013 : Rio Nuevo and City of Tucson settle all disputes

TUCSON - The City of Tucson and the Rio Nuevo District have settled all their disputes.

"No side got everything it wanted," Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said, "but in my experience as an attorney, that's a good sign that reason has prevailed."

Rio Nuevo will spend at least $6 million renovating the Tucson Convention Center. Most of the money will be spent in the Arena on items like bathrooms, seats and the scoreboard. The upgrades are expected to attract more shows.

Little Sicily Pizza is in La Placita Village next to the Tucson Convention Center. Mark Massong helps his uncle run the restaurant.

"Without TCC we wouldn't even be in business," Massong said. "So it's a blessing to have TCC."

Rio Nuevo Board Chair Fletcher McCusker has been negotiating with the Mayor for months.

"It's fair," McCusker said, "but more importantly to us, it allows us to move forward."

Rio Nuevo will also spend $1.1 million on Mission Gardens on the West Side.

Rio Nuevo will spend $750,000 on streetscapes.

Rio Nuevo will pay the City $2.2 million in bond payments it owes.

The City of Tucson will take full control of the Depot Garage. It will pay Rio Nuevo for the property over the next 37 years.

A new hotel is still expected Downtown. There are 2 or 3 proposals in the works, according to McCusker.
