TUCSON - Today outside a federal courthouse where Jared Loughner pleaded guilty to 19 charges for murdering six people and wounding 13 others, several survivors of the shooting, including Ron Barber, spoke briefly to the press.
After comments by representatives from the prosecution, Representative Ron Barber took the podium and spoke.
"What happened on that terrible day was an aberration," he said. "It does not define us as a community. Since that day, I have been focused on how we as a community come together. How we have brought good out of the bad of that day. that is the true faith of tucson, and I am personally very grateful for the compassion, the support and the prayers all of us continue to receive from our community."
Barber was injured after being shot on January 8, 2011 outside a "Congress on Your Corner" event for then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffods, his former employer. Giffords was shot in the head, after resigning in the midst of her recovery, Barber won a special election to fill her seat.
Several other survivors of the shooting spoke at the news conference - News 4 Tucson will post raw video of their statements shortly.
