TUCSON - A fight broke out at the Arizona State Prison at Wilmot involving about 200 inmates, injuring at least 10 people.
The fight began at about 5:30pm in the Santa Rita unit. Corrections officials believe this incident was racially motivated between Hispanic and African American inmates.
Tucson Fire officials tell News 4 Tucson that about 10 people were taken to the hospital, with most of them suffering minor injuries.
"The triage itself, that's what we do is just a quick assessment of those injuries and after we've gotten a total assessment of those injuries, then we move to the next phase which is transporting those patients," said Barrett Baker, spokesman for TFD.
The inmates were escorted to the hospital with two officers on security detail for every inmate transported.
One of those injured was a corrections officer, suffering from some sort of a rib injury, Corrections officials said.
The Santa Rita unit is on lockdown pending the investigation as inmates are interviewed to determine the source of this disturbance.
