Posted 11:00 PM 7/16/2012 : Storm wallops Tucson's South, Southeast sides, knocks out power
A storm touched down on the east side of Tucson yesterday evening leaving behind a trail of downed power lines and thousands without power. Tucson Electric Power reported receiving calls at approximately 7:45 pm from customers who had lost power in the area of Wilmot and I-10. Neighbors in the area reported extremely strong winds, rain and hail. While there was little property damage, seven utility poles did come down with one completely sheared off. TEP estimated that 2500 homes were affected by the outage. It was initially reported that Wilmot road would be closed from I-10 to Hermans Road, fortunately the fallen poles did not impede the roadway and police were able to keep traffic moving. As of 9:30 pm TEP had no information regarding when power might be restored to the area.
