Posted 11:42 AM 6/25/2012 : Postal workers protest pending closure of Tucson's only mail processing center
Outrage and anger as hundreds are set to lose their jobs with the Postal Service. It is all part of the pending closure of Tucson's only mail processing center.
More than a dozen people hit the street in Tucson Monday morning to support a small group of postal workers on a hunger strike in Washington. Both groups have the same goal, to speak out against the pending cuts and urge Congress to act.
"Every day there's stress, will we close, won't we close, where will I work, how will I support my family," said Connie Sadler-Nelson of the American Postal Worker's Union.
The move will delay mail delivery and cost nearly 300 people their jobs. Kenneth Lamonica works as an automation clerk at the Cherrybell Center. He should be able to retire soon but says many of his coworkers cannot.
"For the younger guys there in their thirties and forties, they're going to lose everything," said Lamonica.
In a written statement to News 4 Tucson the Postal Service said, "The dire financial condition of the Postal Service - which is currently losing $25 million a day and is projected to record a loss of more than $14 billion this fiscal year - requires necessary and responsible cost reduction steps to ensure the long-term affordability of mail, and to return the organization to long-term financial stability."
The Cherrybell location along with 140 others across the country will close in February 2013. The others are scheduled to close in February 2014.
