TUCSON- The candidates running in the Congressional District 8 special election and their volunteers spent the weekend reaching out to last-minute voters.

Ron Barber is facing Republican Jesse Kelly and Green Party candidate Charlie Manolakis.

With the election just two days away, volunteers for both the Pima County Democrat and Republic parties are busy working phone banks.

Volunteers are working up until the very last minute keeping busy with phone calls, door knocks, even passing out fliers to make sure everyone gets out to vote.

It's a sprint until the finish line.

Both Jesse Kelly and Ron Barber's camp are doing everything they can to make sure they come out on top.

"Everybody needs to vote because the numbers are really close," said Ann Frerichs, a volunteer with Barber's campaign.

Kelly's camp agrees.

"We want to make sure that every one of those voters get the chance to get their ballot in," said John Ellinwood with Kelly's campaign.

Matt Kopec has been volunteering with Ron Barber's campaign since it kicked off.

He said his main job has been canvassing neighborhoods and handing out fliers.

"I'm just happy to get people information that they can use," said Kopec.

Robert Contreras volunteers with the phone bank for Jesse Kelly's campaign.

"Generally just an encouragement to get out the vote, we're not trying to make people mad or get people yell at us just trying to say that the election is coming up on Tuesday," said Contreras.

But sometime these volunteers do get yelled at, but it doesn't take long for volunteers to learn to gracefully handle that for the sake of their candidate.

"They know that it's not their friend and they just want to hang up," said Contreras.

Even Kopec can admit to getting the brush off every now and then.

"Every once in a while you get one or two people who are busy with something else and don't want to talk, but overall it's a great experience," said Kopec.
