TUCSON - Police have identified the man who was struck by a train near downtown Sunday evening and have confirmed that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At about 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Tucson Police officers responded to the AMTRAK Station at 400 North Toole Avenue, along with Union Pacific Railroad Police and personnel from Tucson Fire, according to a TPD news release. Officers located a man later identified as 62-year-old Charles Heffington, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the police investigation, the train was on the westbound track when the train's crew members noticed Heffington lying or sitting against the outside of the track as they approached the AMTRAK Station. The operators activated the emergency brake and sounded the horn, but the train was unable to stop in time and Heffington was struck, the news release states.
