TUCSON- More electronic books, more meeting space and more events to promote literacy.

It's all part of a four-year strategic plan, drafted by the Pima County Library Board, aiming to move local libraries into an emerging era of electronic learning. "I think we're at the beginning of an electronic approach to reading," Board President Tom Ward says.

The first part of the plan is bringing in more electronic books to Pima County libraries. Over the next four years the library plans to increase spending on e-books by 15%. 

Fathers like Christian Vasquez, who often takes his four-year-old daughter to the library, thinks it's a great idea. "It will be good for children to get introduced to the technology because pretty soon that's all they're going to be using," Vasquez says.

More e-books means less paperbacks on the shelf, which leads to the second part of the library's strategic plan: more space for community events. "It's about bringing people together to learn all sorts of things to connect with each other," Ward says. "To meet with each other and to partner with each other so we have a better community."

The additional space will include more resources, like 3-D printers and computer programs where visitors can edit photos and videos.

Library leaders hope the new technology and the additional space will help them accomplish part three of their plan - get more people reading across Pima County.
