TUCSON - Several Tucson children have been selected to become photojournalists in the award winning program "Pictures of Hope".
Children from Our Family Services New Beginnings Program will capture their "hopes and dreams" on film.
Award winning photojournalist and author, Linda Solomon, brings her nationally acclaimed program "Pictures of Hope" to Tucson, personally selected by Ms. Solomon as one of the 12 cities to participate in the program for two years in a row.
At New Beginnings, Ms. Solomon will provide a photography lesson and empower these local children (ages 7-12) to capture photos of hope. Following this photo exercise, the children will be surprised with cameras from Ms. Solomon and Rob Draper, president and dealer principal of O'Rielly Chevrolet.
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild will mentor a child on Saturday, September 9 beginning at 10:00 am, when all the mentors will meet the kids at New Beginnings.
"Through photography children share their heartfelt feelings", expressed Ms. Solomon. "Their hopes and dreams captured in quiet moments tell a story that few adults can imagine. When you show children that you care about what they wish for in life, it builds self-esteem. I am very proud to work with Chevrolet and help children in this 2012 expanded 12 city program. The children's photographs will express their heart. Their photo assignment to photograph their 'hopes and dreams' is life-changing."
Chevrolet, a division of General Motors, has partnered for the second year with Ms. Solomon for the "Pictures of Hope" program to help children across the United States express their hearts.
"At Chevrolet, giving back to the community and inspiring future generations is important to Chevrolet, its employees and its dealer body," said Don Johnson, vice president of sales for Chevrolet. "Working with 'Pictures of Hope' we are able to provide less fortunate children the opportunity to photograph heartfelt snapshots of their everyday lives accompanied with words about their hopes and dreams, in a creative way to help build pride and self-esteem in their lives."
The children participating in Pictures of Hope come from low-income families that have become
homeless for economic reasons and who are living in New Beginnings housing. Their families receive help with basic needs, supportive case management, education, training and job-search skills.
"Our young clients have so many dreams - steady jobs for their parents, a stable place to live, regular meals on the table," said Our Family Executive Director Patti Caldwell. "Pictures of Hope helps bring those dreams to life and make them visible. We are honored to be selected to participate again a second year."
The hopes and dreams of children in Tucson will then be transformed into holiday greeting cards which will be sold through New Beginnings, a transitional living facility for homeless children, youth and families. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the "Pictures of Hope" greeting cards will benefit the many families and children who receive services at New Beginnings due to the generosity of O'Rielly Chevrolet. The children at New Beginnings will see their "Pictures of Hope" cards for the first time at a celebration and Meet the Young Artist Reception at O'Rielly Chevrolet in November.
