GREEN VALLEY - Residents in Green Valley are on alert after a string of thefts of golf carts and golf cart batteries have been reported in the area.
In one instance, between 40 and 50 batteries were stolen from a golf shop in a weekend heist.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the thefts. They believe this is a typically example of "crime of opportunity."
"These batteries are simply taken for their material value and being brought to recyclers or you know whoever would be willing to buy them," said Tom Penie, spokesman for PCSD.
Jerry Johnson, who is an avid Green Valley golfer, says most of the people living there feel that it's a "very quiet community and there isn't much going on."
However, after learning of the thefts, Johnson says the person behind the thefts are taking advantage of the retirement communities in the area.
"People are coming in and realizing this and they are taking the batteries out of the vehicles and selling them," Johsnon said.
He plans on locking up his golfing equipment tonight and hopes others in the community do the same. He also suggests locking the seat down onto the frame of the golf cart so that the batteries can not be easily removed.
PCSD is urging residents to be vigilant.
"The people need to watch out and if they see anything suspicious, somebody that doesn't belong or that is involved in this type of activity, let us know about it," Penie said.
