ORO VALLEY, Ariz. - The Town of Oro Valley wants to hear from you. In an effort to increase tourism and community development, leaders are trying to come up with a cohesive town image.
Oro Valley has changed a quite a bit through the years. "Early on back in 1974 when it was founded, their whole goal was to be the largest retirement town in the country," Mayor Satish Hiremath says.
But today Hiremath says retirees make up less than 40% of Oro Valley's population.
"When I think Oro Valley, I think a family center," Resident Ethnee Taylor says. "There are a lot of activities and recreational areas and things for families to do here."
Now town leaders want to create an image that supports that young family demographic. "It's really getting out of that mindset, getting us to go from a retirement community to what?" Hiremath says.
Town leaders recently posted a 19 question survey online to find out how residents and people, who live nearby, view the town. "What is Oro Valley? Who is Oro Valley and what direction do we want to head in?" Hiremath says.
The survey asks people what they like most about Oro Valley. "It's kind of one of those quiet neighborhoods where you can raise a family," Taylor says.
It also asks people what they like least. "It's definitely an area that's up and coming and building, so sometimes you have to go pretty far to find some stores and restaurants," Taylor says.
Town leaders hope to come up with a brand within the year. Once they do, the goal is to spread it across town and social media websites. "It's going to be everywhere," Hiremath says.
